Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities in Care Training

Our Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities in Care Course works in conjunction with Standard 9 of the Care Certificate and provides awareness training that teaches carers to be aware of mental health conditions, learning disabilities and dementia within a care setting.

Learning Outcomes

• Understand the different mental health problems, learning disabilities someone might experience
• Understand the need to tailor the care someone might receive to their mental health, learning disabilities or dementia
• Learn about the law surrounding mental capacity

Section 1

In this first section, we’ll look at a number of mental health issues, including mental illnesses, extreme states of mental ill-health, dementia, and learning disabilities. We’ll see what all these terms mean, their tell-tale signs and symptoms, what causes them, and what treatments or support is available.

Section 2

In the second section we’ll see what that kind of person-centred support looks like, including why you always need to assess and adapt the care you offer to suit your patient’s ever-changing needs, and why it’s so important to recognise and diagnose mental health issues, dementia, and learning disabilities as soon as possible.

Section 3

People with mental health issues, dementia, and learning disabilities are often more vulnerable to harm and abuse. In this final section of the course, we’ll take a look at how the law aims to protect vulnerable people, how it promotes their rights and ensures that their capacity to make decisions is never undermined.
