This course has been developed in line with national UK guidance including the RCGP’s Mental Health in Primary Care framework, NICE recommendations, and the NHS National Service Framework for Mental Health. However, all healthcare professionals should continue to build their clinical competence through supervised practice in their workplace. You should only manage mental health presentations independently when both you and your employer are satisfied that you are competent to do so.

This course is designed to equip Practice Nurses, HCAs and other healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively address mental health issues within the primary care setting. Participants will explore the significance of mental health and the role of addressing mental health issues. We gain an in-depth understanding of common mental health disorders, looking at signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment approaches.

Through sessions on assessment and screening tools, communication skills, and intervention strategies, participants will gain practical insights into providing optimal mental health care. The course also covers child and adolescent mental health services, holistic approaches, and health promotion, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of primary mental health care. By the end of this two-day course, participants will develop an enhanced understanding and will feel more confident to promote positive mental health and resilience within the primary care setting.
