This face to face one day phlebotomy practical workshop training covers all the elements you will need to start taking blood. You will be provided with the background and rationale for blood taking practice and an exploration of the equipment and processes. You will then be getting stuck into the hands on practice of phlebotomy using our high quality and realistic equipment, and guided by our experienced instructor.

So who is the course suitable for?

The course is suitable for anyone who is new to phlebotomy or looking for a practical skills workshop to accompany any theory training they have done. This may be include those who have not practiced their skills for some time or may be changing their role in healthcare organisations.

Who is the trainer?

She is also a qualified teacher and has worked as an adult education lecturer. The majority of Alys’s work time is spent writing and delivering clinical training programmes including immunisation, phlebotomy and travel health. She also writes for a travel health journal and even finds time to be a mum to two young children.[/author_info] [/author]

So what’s included in this phlebotomy practical workshop training course?

This one day face to face practical workshop will provide you with hands on time with our experienced trainer to practice all the skills that you will have learned about in your theory part of the course.

Course content 

• Roles and responsibilities for practitioner 
• Practitioner’s roles and responsibilities
• Summary of national standards, current resources, and legal aspects of phlebotomy
• Anatomy & physiology of veins and other structures in the common anatomical areas for accessing veins 
• Practical demonstrate of techniques 
• Safety, infection control, ANTT, and consent 
• Exploration of the different types of equipment found in practice, such as BD Vacutainer devices and S-Monovettes, butterflies, and straight needles
• Complications of phlebotomy using case studies 
• Competency and sign off of documents used in in practice

So what’s NOT included in this phlebotomy training course?

You will observe practical demonstrations throughout the course and you will have the option to explore/practice with the equipment. 

The course doesn’t cover cannulation. This requires an additional course.

Whilst the course covers blood taking techniques for children, it does not cover techniques such as scalp and heel prick samples which are specialist skills requiring additional training.

Arterial blood gas technique and analysis are not covered on this course

Venous blood gases can be obtained from the principles learned on this course.  However, using blood gas machines and blood gas analysis are not covered on the course.

Are there any other considerations with this training?

Practical face-to-face workshop session times usually run from 9.30am – 4.30pm, however we can work around the needs of your organisation.

Workshops can be run anywhere around the UK either in your venue or we can organise that for you.

Please note that all of our phlebotomy training follows national and international guidance on best practices for taking blood. The guidance states that competence in phlebotomy practices should be an essential part of the final evaluation of those training as health workers, and that regular in-service training and supportive supervision should be provided.
