So what’s included in this online Fundamentals of Phlebotomy course?

Firstly, this is an interactive, engaging, and comprehensive e-learning course. We have therefore included all of the core skills and topics required for the successful delegate to confidently commence the practice of blood taking under supervision. There are videos, interactions, assessments, and reflective opportunities throughout the course. You will not be practically assessed as part of the course.

So what’s NOT included in this phlebotomy training course?

You will observe videos and diagrams of practical demonstrations on the course as well as examples of using the correct equipment. You will not, however,  be practically assessed as part of the course.

Whilst the course covers blood taking techniques for children, it does not cover techniques such as scalp and heel prick samples which are specialist skills requiring additional training.

Arterial blood gas technique and analysis are not covered on this course

Venous blood gases can be obtained from the principles learned on this course.  However, using blood gas machines and blood gas analysis are not covered on the course.

Are there any other considerations with this training?

Equipment:

You will get much more out of the course if you have access to relevant equipment to practice. To make this super easy for you we have some comprehensive packs that can be sent out in advance of your course containing a simulation vein, a variety of different sizes, models and types of needle device and sampling tubes:

The following equipment will be useful to have available (All included in our comprehensive pack):

• Blood taking needles/butterflies, and related ‘connector systems’
• a selection of the sample tubes
• Tourniquet
• IV training pad 

Please note that all of our phlebotomy training follows national and international guidance on best practices for taking blood. The guidance states that competence in phlebotomy practices should be an essential part of the final evaluation of those training as health workers, and that regular in-service training and supportive supervision should be provided. Our free phlebotomy competency workbook provides a framework for guiding supervised practice. All health workers undertaking phlebotomy must also be trained in infection prevention and control procedures, and sharps disposal.
